김 자영 박사는 울산의대 생물학과를 졸업하고 우여곡절 끝에 경희의대 분자생물학교실에 와 6년 전에 경희의대 분자생물학교실에서 박사를 받았습니다. 박사 받고 Harvard Medical School의 Dr. Michael R. Freeman 교수님에게 Post-Doc으로 갈 때는 김 자영 박사 본인도 지도교수인 저도 김 자영 박사가 이렇게 성공할 수 있으리라고는 생각할 수 없었습니다.
6년이 지난 지금 김 자영 박사는 Harvard Medical School의 비뇨기과 교수로 채용되는 것 같습니다. 2년 전부터 instructor로 있었는데 이제는 자신의 연구비를 받아 직접 자신의 연구실을 운영하는 principal investigator가 되었다고 합니다. Harvard Medical School의 비뇨기과 교수가 되는 것입니다.
경희의대, 경희의학전문대학원 학생들은 꾸준히 노력하면 김 자영 박사보다 더 잘 할 수 있을 것으로 생각합니다. 많은 경희의대, 경희의학전문대학원 학생들이 좋은 연구 결과 (논문)을 발표하여 세계적으로 인정받는 의학자가 되기를 희망합니다.

Happy holidays! I was very sorry to hear you weren't coming to Boston after all. I hope we have the chance to get together again soon.
Thank you for sending your student's CV. I would be interested in discussing further the possibility of Dr. Lim joining my lab. Is there a possibility of partial or 1st year support for her from the Korean government? We are in a good funding situation at the moment, however the NIH budget is likely to remain flat over the 2008 fiscal year because of the troubled relationship at the moment between the Democratic Congress and President Bush. The president vetoed the NIH budget a few weeks ago, which contained a reasonable but modest increase over the previous year's funding levels. Those of us supported by NIH grants are being cautious about making commitments to new hires in this climate. We are hoping the future will be brighter when a new president takes over after next year's national elections.
That said, we have a lot of exciting work going on here. I've attached a recent paper in EMBO Journal. Jayoung published a first author paper in Cancer Research in October, describing the discovery of a lipid kinase that mediates EGFR trafficking to the nucleus. She is now leading a research team and has branched out into bladder cancer and interstitial cystitis. She recently was awarded a grant from the Interstitial Cystitis Association as PI and is a finalist in the competition for the Edwin Beer Scholar Awards given by the New York Academy of Medicine. In the first round, her proposal received the highest score in a field of about 25 superb applicants. This is a faculty transition award.
